Where does AI get the businesses it recommends? We asked an AI assistant with web search for five kinds of local business in Mexico's three largest cities and counted which sites it read to answer.
- AI builds local recommendations from directories, booking platforms, guides and local media, rarely from a small business's own website.
- Sources are stable: 66% repeated between two runs of the same 15 questions. Recommended names are not: 42%.
- Chains and famous places take most slots; independent businesses rarely appear.
